Are we buying unnecessary gadgets ? Wasting or Prestige
Shopping – Did anyone have a feeling that you're buying really unnecessary technology stuffs , day by day ? With the never-ending advances in consumer electronics, one too many blinks and you might miss the latest technology release. Are they so unnecessary for living ? Are they really ? The list presents a vast variety of eye-candy technology.

Well , if we look from all sides ... this consumer fever was shown on iPhone maddens ! You have already damn cell phone with all bunch of stuff and why you need now iPhone ??!
I was argue with my friend last week about unnecessary stuff - gadgets and he still think that iPhone is prestige not wasting ...
For one year from now you will have something new ('revolutionary' ) again to buy ... Is this only I see or what ?
So ,how is right me or him ?
Your friend sees it as prestige and you have to ask who is right? To me it's fairly simple, how many others that you and your friend know ran out to buy an Iphone? Are you impressed that your friend has an Iphone? Is anyone else impressed? You can count me as one who is extremely unimpressed, and underwhelmed, by the Iphone And those that think they needed one right away. People that run out to buy new technology as soon as it is available do serve a purpose though, they work the bugs out of things for the rest of us that can wait until those bugs are identified and fixed. But is buying a lot of gadgets you don't really need wasteful, of course it is.
I bought my iPhone to use as a portable computer (mainly Blogging, social bookmarking) and to use it as an iPod plus a phone. I don't see me upgrading it for at least 2 years. But if you keep on saying "Oh something better will come out" then you will never buy a piece of technology, ever. The very second it's announced it's already obsolete. You purchase something knowing a new and better version will come out.
I am very impressed with the phone and love the interface, others phones just won't cut it for me and I need an ultra portable I can slip into my pocket.
i think it's stupid & wasteful. if it was up to me i wouldn't even have a digital camera, i liked my film just fine. dh is a gadget junkie so he got it for me for yule. he also gave me his old cellphone & i don't even know where i put it. i've only had a computer about 4 years & that was also due to him. i have to rein his silly butt in on lots of junk he wants to buy. i just don't see the need for all the gadgets.
Personally, I think that the techno-geeks that bow to the latest and greatest are a bunch of anal morons. They, obviously, need to get a life. The fear I have is the technology getting into the wrong hands. It seems that every time we export our intellectual property it comes back to haunt us. I can imagine the terrorists' glee trying to determine to what nefarious scheme they can apply this new invention from the 'Great Satan'.
Otherwise, I can probably find a thousand better ways to spend $500.00.
Einstein had an interesting take on technology and gadgetry.
He defined high tech as "using the right technology for the task at hand . . . sometimes a pencil . . . sometimes Univac."
I agree with him. Too often this stuff completes the task faster but ultimately makes more work in maintenance and downtime.
Univac, for you kids out there, was a very large computer that lived in its own rooms with subflooring and strict climate control. It had less power than the Mac I'm typing this on.
Technolgy maddness has been sweeping the country for far too long and there is so much out there they can never keep up. The kids that have grown up with computers in schools and in the home have been brainwashed with this insatiable desire and perceived need to have the latest gadgets. Gadgets serve no purpose other than to get your hard earned money as a consumer. So what all these gadgets can do everything, when and how will you ever use it? Probably never. My computer is an acient relic at 8 years old but I have yet to use all its potential, I just don't have the time to use it all. The american consumer is being isolated by technology into individuals on their own individual paths in their homes, work place, and crowded malls. There is no socializing or interaction with each other at a personal level. It is all done impersonally and over long distance with no social skills or understanding of others needs. Technology interferes with our personal social lives, even in marriage.
I certainly see almost everyone's point on this subject, but I do need to say, as a freelance designer working from my home, I just couldn't do it without a lot of these devices. I am now able to produce projects, on my own, and in less time than it would have taken a team of professionals to accomplish a scant decade ago. For many, a lot of these devices are just high-priced toys, but for me they bestow a freedom to make a living on my own terms. I purchased the iPhone, and love it! It integrates three or four devices that my business relies on into one elegant interface. So instead of having to replace my 6 year old palm, 4 year old cell phone with failing battery, my original-version iPod and to some extent, my ailing laptop, I only purchased one device, and at a savings to boot.
May I also remind everyone we are communicating on a device that not too many years ago was considered a "status" symbol that the public at large really didn't need. Just a thought

Now, we must have measure about this things , that is the most important.We must have balance about useful things and this which was not so necessary for you life !!
I not saying that we better run in stone age , no - I'm not thinking about that .
Technology giving you choices but and unnecessary choices, so that's all about.
To be modern person you really don't need iPhone or Wooden USB memory sticks , using technology wisely make you modern person .
If you already have cell phone and PDA ... is iPhone so necessary ? If I'm going in park or nature or some real vacation I wouldn't go with all this damn things ! LOL
I agree. Like with everything that has ever been invented before. The devices themselves are not innately bad, it's how, or in what context, they are used. We all have to take responsibility for the way we use or purchase these new gadgets.
One point about the wooded USB device: some of these objects are more an art object than a pure gadget. Almost acting as a commentary on technology themselves. Art is a whole separate debate!
